He was well versed in the sūtras and treatises, excelling particularly in the Mahāparinirvāṇa-sūtra; his eloquence and responsiveness in lectures made him foremost in the realm. At the age of seventy-one, when first taken ill near the end of his life, he said to his disciples: 'Throughout my life, correct faith has dwelt in my heart, and towards the Buddha’s doctrine I have never had a slighting thought. I do not worry about failing to be born in the Pure Land.' He immediately ordered his quarters swept clean and incense burned in solemn expectation. After being confined to bed for many days with illness, he suddenly sat up on his own, joined his palms, and said to his attendants: 'Make a seat for the World-Honoured One to sit.' Then he said aloud: 'The World-Honoured One has come. Shanzhou now repents with shame.' After a long while like this, he said: 'The World-Honoured One has departed,' and bowed low as if seeing him off. Lying back down, he said: 'Amitābha Buddha came just now; did you not see him? Soon I shall depart.' Shortly after speaking, he died.
