> Sun Daode of the Jin was a native of Yizhou and a Libationer of the Daoist tradition. Past the age of fifty, he had no sons. He lived near a vihāra. During the Jingping era, a monk told Daode: "If you truly wish for a son, you must worship and recite the \*Avalokiteśvara Sūtra\* with utmost sincerity; this may be granted." Daode then abandoned his service to Daoism and devoted his single-minded sincerity to taking refuge in Avalokiteśvara. Within a few days, he had a dream response; his wife conceived and subsequently gave birth to a boy.
