> Lady Dulu, wife of Duke Dachèn of the Dou clan during the Tang, was the elder sister of Kuan, Duke of Rui. The lady had faith in karmic blessings and constantly recited the Diamond Prajñā Sūtra. For a long time she had not managed to complete about one sheet remaining at the end of the scroll. Later, one day at dusk, she suffered a severe headache, her four limbs were restless, and when she lay down at night, it grew even worse. The lady thought to herself that if she were to die, she would not be able to finish the sūtra, so she wished to rise and recite it, but the candle in the hall had already gone out. The lady thereupon got up and ordered her maidservant to light a lamp. In a moment the maid returned: there was no fire in the kitchen. The lady opened the door to fetch some from the servants' quarters, but there was no fire there either. The lady lamented and grieved even more deeply. Suddenly she saw a burning candle in the kitchen; it ascended the steps, entered the hall, and came straight to the front of her bed, about three chi above the ground, held by no one, shining as bright as day. The lady was surprised and delighted, and her headache was also cured. She took the scripture and recited it. After a short while, the servants obtained fire by twirling a fire-drill; when they brought a lit candle into the hall, the floating candle's light immediately went out. She then finished reciting it that very night. From then on, she made it her regular practice to recite it five times a day. Later, when the Duke of Rui was about to die, the lady went to visit him. The Duke said to the lady, 'Because of the merit of reciting the sūtra, my elder sister will surely live to a hundred years and be born in a good place.' The lady lived to the age of eighty before passing away at her residence.
