> Zhao Wenxin, a native of Suizhou in the Tang, died suddenly in the first year of the Zhenguan reign era. After three days, he revived, and he related the account himself: On the day of his initial death, he was hemmed in and driven forward by men; his companions were ten in number, and together they proceeded to King Yama's place. Among them he saw a monk. The King first summoned the master and asked, 'What meritorious virtues have you cultivated throughout your life?' The master replied, 'From birth onwards, this poor monk has only recited the Diamond Prajñā.' Hearing these words, the King suddenly rose in surprise, joined his palms, and praised him, saying, 'Excellent, excellent! Since you, Master, have truly recited Prajñā, you ought to ascend to the heavens and transcend the mundane world. Why have you come here by mistake?' Before the King had finished speaking, heavenly robes suddenly descended, leading the master away to ascend to the heavens. The King then called the man of Suizhou forward: 'What meritorious virtues have you cultivated throughout your life?' The man reported to the King, 'Throughout my life, your servant has not cultivated Buddhist scriptures; I only took pleasure in compiling the literary works of Yu Xin.' The King said, 'That Yu Xin is a great sinner, currently suffering torment here. Have you seen Yu Xin, or do you recognize him?' The man reported, 'Though I have read his writings, I do not know the man.' The King then dispatched men to bring out Yu Xin to show the man; he saw a tortoise with one body and many heads. Shortly after the tortoise departed, a man appeared, who said, 'I am Yu Xin. Because I was fond of composing literature during my lifetime, I falsely quoted Buddhist scriptures, mingling them with secular books, and slandered the Buddha-Dharma, declaring that it was inferior to the teachings of Confucius and Laozi. Today I suffer the retribution of a tortoise's body in misery.' After this man revived, he recounted everything to his relatives. In the region of Suizhou, many people enjoyed hunting and catching insects and fish. Those who heard and saw this far and near took it as a mutual warning, permanently severing karmic acts of killing, and each brought forth sincere resolve to receive and uphold the Prajñā; down to the present, it has never ceased.
