> The commentary states: In what is described here regarding deportment, appearances, central and peripheral lands, and seasonal customs, each has its distinct etiquette. One practices according to the country, taking reverence as the basis. This pertains to the initial resolve; without study, it cannot be understood. Therefore, it is necessary to go through them in detail to instruct those who have not yet heard. Of long-practising, eminent worthies, this is certainly not what is expected. However, the reverent manners of Madhyadeśa and those of Cīnasthāna are not the same: there, prostrations are few and circumambulations many, whereas here, prostrations are many and circumambulations few; there, baring the shoulder and exposing the feet constitutes respect, whereas here, properly arranging the cap and shoes is termed reverence. These are truly different appearances of the sacred and the mundane, different categories of regional lands. One must only examine the etiquette carefully according to the leisure or urgency of the occasion: if there is ample time for audience, the trividhadvāra are applied earnestly; if time is pressing and urgent, the four limbs are abbreviated. These are all essentials of action and withdrawal, wisdom arising without prior thought, sufficient to increase reverence, exhaust grief, and communicate intention between self and other. Therefore, the Avadāna-sūtra says: there is the deportment of a faithful layman, the deportment of one who has gone forth, the deportment of a great practitioner of the Way, and the deportment of a lesser practitioner of the Way. Because these are the foundation of good conduct leading toward the Way, one is born in good realms. From this textual evidence, it is clearly known that the deportment of taking refuge in faith is the beginning of entering the Way and must not be concealed or omitted. Therefore, this preface is composed to designate it.
