> I comment: This section distinguishes five ritual forms. The first explains removing footwear. This is the ritual expressing the utmost respect. In the court etiquette of ministers in this land, they all remain in the palace courtyard without removing their footwear; on occasions when they ascend the hall, both sword and shoes are discarded. This is an ancient rule, not a recent etiquette. In India, the ground is mostly hot and humid, so sandals of leather were prescribed to be worn. When seeing a superior venerable one, they are immediately ordered to take them off. In other, colder lands, shoes are worn according to availability; when performing ritual acts, uncovering the feet is an act of respect. For white-robed laypeople, wearing boots and shoes is mostly an expression of respect. When first entering a monastery, one does not need to uncover the feet; if entering a Buddha hall, taking them off is foremost.
