> Laywomen in the household have many faults of affliction and poison. The Buddha taught that their deceitful flattery exceeds that of men. Some falsely apply paint to face and head, decorating themselves with rouge and powder. Some wear patterned silks and fine clothes to entice and deceive foolish men. Some proudly play with their lips, casting sidelong glances, singing, and laughing. Some sigh and hum, looking around and watching people. Some bare their chests and expose their hands, masking the face and concealing the head. Some walk slowly with measured steps, swaying the body and playing with their shadows. Some open and close their eyes, now sorrowful, now joyful, hallucinating and confusing foolish men to cause their minds to cling delusionally. Such seductive deceits can hardly be fully recounted. Worldly ordinary beings become besotted and are all bewildered by them. They are like treachery and deceit in manifold ways, like a painted vase storing dung to deceive people, like a high net into which flocks of birds fall, like a dense net into which schools of fish cast themselves, like a dark pit into which the blind stumble, like flying moths seeing fire and throwing themselves into it, and like bluebottles craving the joy of a stinking corpse. Approaching them brings the loss of the country and destruction of the family. Touching them is like grasping a poisonous snake. Their outward speech is like honey; their inner mind is like venom. Household poverty and distress all stem from women. Going abroad and losing one's life also stems from women. Domestic discord also stems from women. Rebellion of sons and daughters also stems from women. Brothers dispersing also stems from women. Estrangement of kin also stems from women. Falling into the miserable destinies also stems from women. Failure to be reborn among humans and devas also stems from women. Obstruction of the path of wholesome karma also stems from women. Failure to attain the noble fruits also stems from women. Such faults and perils cannot be fully discussed. Sentient beings being like this are deeply pitiable. Constantly burned by the fire of desire and unable to leave it, they bring upon themselves calamities and suffering that continue endlessly.
