> The winter fox grows abundant fine fur; / The spring silkworm draws out light silk. / The physical frame, on the contrary, becomes an obstruction; / The mental consciousness, in turn, deceives itself. / Losing one's baby teeth, one sings and drums one's belly; / Throughout one's youth and early days, / Driving a carriage, one chases knights-errant; / Pouring wine, one dallies with bewitching beauties. / Only thinking of the delights before one's eyes, / How could one know the sorrow of future lives? / Startled, once feeling shame, / One says farewell forever to passion and love. / Wishing to know the origin of the real and the false, / The defiled and the pure naturally separate. / Ashamed to be hindered by the five hindrances, / How can one know how to equal the four reliances?
