> During the Wude era of the Tang, there was in Hedong an ascetic nun named Faxin who constantly recited the Lotus Sūtra. Seeking out a scribe skilled in calligraphy, she paid him several times the usual fee, and specially prepared a pure chamber for him to copy this sūtra. Whenever \[he\] arose, \[he would\] bathe and burn incense to perfume his robes. Moreover, she had a hole pierced through the wall of the copying chamber leading to the outside and inserted a bamboo tube, bidding the scribe, whenever he wished to exhale, to hold the bamboo tube lightly in his mouth and breathe his breath outside the wall. The copying of the seven fascicles took eight years to complete. Her offerings were earnest and profound, exhausting all reverence. The monk Faduān of Longmen frequently gathered a great assembly to lecture on the Lotus Sūtra. Because this nun's manuscript was fine and correct, he sent someone to request it. The nun steadfastly declined and would not grant it, so Faduān reproached her. Having no alternative, the nun personally delivered it to him. When Faduān and the others opened it to read, they saw only yellow paper, completely devoid of characters. Opening the remaining fascicles, all were likewise. Ashamed and frightened, Faduān and the others immediately returned it to the nun. Weeping in grief, the nun received it, washed the case with fragrant water, bathed, placed \[the sūtra\] upon her head, and circumambulated the Buddha, practising the path for seven days and nights without pausing to rest. Afterward, when she opened and examined it, the characters were just as before. Thus one knows that in copying she had added profound purity; that there had previously been no efficacy was solely because \[their\] sincerity was not profound. (The above single piece of evidence is from the Mingbaoji.)
