> Traveling five hundred li southwest from here through a great forest, one reaches the country of Vārāṇasī, which belongs to Central India (formerly called Boluonai). The capital city faces the Gaṅgā River to the west, and is densely populated. Northeast of the city is the Vārāṇasī River. More than ten li to the northeast is the Deer Park Monastery. Further to the southwest is a stūpa, over a hundred feet high, in front of which is a stone pillar over seventy feet high; it is lucid and pure, and images appear in sympathetic response to sincerity, according to one's good or evil; this is where \[the Buddha\], having attained the Way, first turned the wheel of the Dharma. Beside it are three stūpas, the places where the three previous Buddhas walked and sat. Nearby are various stūpas, where five hundred pratyekabuddhas entered extinction. Beside that is another stūpa, where Maitreya Bodhisattva received his prediction. Further west is a stūpa where the Buddha, in the past as the Bodhisattva Prabhāpāla, was granted the prediction of his future attainment of Buddhahood by Kāśyapa Buddha. Next to the south is the place where the four Buddhas walked, fifty paces long and seven feet high, built of stacked green stone, upon which is an image of Śākyamuni walking; its form is extraordinary, with curls of hair protruding from the uṣṇīṣa, miraculous and verified by signs. Traces at the monastery are extremely numerous; vihāras and stūpas number in the hundreds, difficult to describe exhaustively. West of the monastery is a clear pond, two hundred paces around, where the Buddha formerly bathed. Next to the west is a small pond, where the Buddha once washed his vessels. Next to the north is a small pond, where the Buddha once washed his robes. In these three adjacent ponds, nāgas dwell; the water is sweet and pure, and if anyone disrespectfully defiles it, a kumbhīra beast immediately attacks and harms them. Beside that is a square stone, upon which are the impressions of the Buddha's kāṣāya; if heretics or evil persons tread upon it lightly, the pond nāgas immediately stir up wind and rain to harm them. Beside that is a stūpa where the Buddha, having once been a six-tusked elephant king, pulled out his tusks and gave them to a hunter because he saw the hunter wearing a Dharma robe. Next is another stūpa where the Buddha, formerly as an elephant, inquired about seniority with a monkey. Further, in the great forest, is a stūpa where the Buddha and Devadatta were formerly deer kings, and the Buddha offered his own life in place of a pregnant doe; the name Deer Park was derived from this. Three li southwest of the monastery is a stūpa where the five men welcomed the Buddha. Three li east of the great forest is a stūpa where the Buddha, formerly as a hare gathered with the other animals, knew that his own body was small and threw himself into fire to offer his flesh; because he moved Śakra to come down in praise, the image of a hare was made to appear in the disc of the moon.
