> Of old, when the Han and Wei sovereigns presided over the realm, they exhausted their military forces and wielded arms, raising armies of a hundred thousand and spending a thousand catties of gold each day, yet they merely carved inscriptions at Tianyan in the north and were blocked at the east. The Great Tang embraces the six directions, its virtue surmounting a hundred kings; wherever its civil virtue reaches, the entire world submits in unison. For this reason, the monastics and laypeople of the various countries of India offer sincere allegiance.
