> Also, the Avadāna-sūtra says: In the past, there were two bhikṣus who both attained the fruit of srotāpanna. One of them constantly engaged in converting \[beings\] and begging alms, using this to generate merit and give in dāna to feed the Saṃgha. At that time, the meditator said to the beggar: 'Why do you not sit in meditation instead of vainly wearing yourself out?' The cultivator of merit said: 'The Buddha also constantly told the bhikṣus: "You should practice dāna."' Later, both died and were born in an elder's household. The one who begged to make merit became the son of the elder's household; slaves and maidservants attended upon him, clothing and food came to him naturally, and his joy was boundless. The meditator was born as the son of a maidservant; sitting alone on the ground, he wept from hunger and thirst. Both knew their former lives. Then the elder's son said to the maidservant's son: 'I told you originally, "You should practice dāna," but you refused to listen to my words. This is your own fault; why do you weep?' When the elder's son grew up, he rode horses and went out sightseeing, and all the slaves, retainers, and the maidservant's son escorted him in his train. Later, both sought to go forth from the household, and having gone forth, both attained the fruit of arhat. The elder's son constantly sat upright, and people vied to bring clothing and food to give him; the maidservant's son begged outside, but no one gave him anything, and he constantly suffered from hunger and thirst. By this cause and condition, a person who practices the Way should not merely uphold the precepts, meditate, and recite, but should also practice dāna and cultivate all forms of meritorious blessing. Therefore, in the Mahāprajāpatī-sūtra, the Buddha spoke in verse:
