> Furthermore, the \*Records of Foreign Lands\* says: The Buddha ascended to the Trāyastriṃśa Heaven to preach the Dharma for his mother, which took ninety days. King Prasenajit longed to see the Buddha, so he carved an image of the Tathāgata out of ox-head sandalwood and placed it on the Buddha's seat. Later, when the Buddha returned and entered the vihāra, the image came out to welcome him. The Buddha said: "Return to your seat. After my parinirvāṇa, you may serve as a model for the fourfold assembly." The image then returned to its seat. This image was the first of all images. The Buddha moved to reside in a small vihāra to the side, separated from the image by twenty paces. The Jetavana vihāra originally had seven stories, and various kingdoms vied to offer ceaseless veneration. An eternal lamp inside the hall had its wick seized by a rat, which burned the banners and canopies, and the fire spread to the vihāra, reducing all seven tiers to ashes. The kings and peoples of all countries were in great sorrow and grief, believing the sandalwood image had been burned. Four or five days later, opening the door of the small vihāra on the eastern side, they suddenly saw that the original image had moved to that room. The multitude rejoiced greatly, repaired the vihāra together, managing to construct two stories, and moved the image back to its original place.
