> Shi Zhichao of Guangyan Temple in Fenzhou during the Tang had the secular surname Tian and was a native of Fengyi in Tongzhou. Diligent and peerless, his refined demeanor was lofty and far-reaching. In the seventh year of the Wude reign, he stayed at Mount Baofu in Fenzhou. His monastic disciples numbered nearly a hundred, relying solely on the great fasts. They had only six dàn of wheat, all stored in a single granary, from which they ground five shēng daily to supply their regular provision. From spring to summer, the calculated consumption was extremely great; surprised, they inspected it and found that only two dàn had been ground. Assessed and measured, the hidden workings behind this matter were worthy of deep reflection. Moreover, he frequently stimulated anomalous monks who flew through the air, coming and going; although there was no verbal communication, their forms and deportment could be verified. Those living with him who were remiss were immediately granted divine warnings. Whenever the bell was struck to summon the assembly, \[the response\] followed in accord; a stone spring welled upward, yielding sufficient water according to people's needs. The frequent evocation of spiritual portents was truly due to Zhichao's merit. On the eleventh day of the third month of the fifteenth year of the Zhenguan reign, he suddenly fell ill and died in the city temple. His spring and autumn were seventy-one.
