> Śramaṇa Chade of Mount Liang in Yong prefecture under the Tang was a native of Liquan county. His stature was tall and magnificent, with prominent eyebrows and a bony face. His conduct was upright and pure, and he wore coarse, plain clothes. He liked to travel about to transform the laity and construct works of merit. He often made foreknowledge of future events to encourage and reward people. In years of violent calamities, poisonous vapors, and pestilence, he would first exhort the four classes of people to revere the Three Jewels, either by bowing to the Buddha and establishing vegetarian feasts, or by reciting the Buddha's name. Those who followed his words all averted calamity, while those who did not believe suffered disasters one after another. His advance predictions of incipient omens were as if happening before one's eyes. When a severe drought occurred, people would anxiously inquire of him, and he would designate a certain day on which it would rain, and even specify the boundary up to a certain place; at the appointed time the rain would fall, invariably conforming to his words. Sometimes he foretold the extent and boundaries reached by rampaging locusts, or predicted the near and far, shallow and deep extents of heaven-sent floods; in all matters he matched a clear mirror without missing the finest detail. Moreover, he held his resolve with purity and prudence, not transgressing the penal codes, and would not accept precepts where his capacity did not yet suffice to practice them. Formerly, in his prime as a man of the Way, he observed only the ten precepts, yet he received and practiced extensively concerning the various categories of monastic transgressions. In his final years, he created the Anavatapta Pond south of Mount Jiuzong and carved a stone bowl, using them by the pond to aid sentient beings. In the twelfth year of the Zhenguan reign era \[638 CE\], he passed away at his mountain hermitage. The people, moved with yearning, erected a white stupa for him, which towered prominently above the mountains.
