> Cao Zhi, King Si of Chen, styled Zijian, was the fourth son of Emperor Wu of Wei. From childhood he embraced refined virtue; at the age of ten he composed literary works, completing them as soon as the brush touched the paper, without ever changing a character. Among worldly arts and skills, there was none in which he was not entirely proficient. Handan Chun saw him and was astonished into admiration, referring to him as a celestial being. Whenever Zhi read Buddhist sūtras, he would linger over them with sighs and admiration, considering them the ultimate culmination of the supreme Path. Thereupon he devised modulated praises with the tonal modulation of the seven tones, rising, falling, and bending; worldly reciters all took them as a standard. Once he was wandering on Mount Yu, when he suddenly heard the sound of the Brahmā heaven in the sky, clear, elegant, plaintive, and delicate, its sound moving the heart. He listened alone for a long time, and then his attendants also heard it. Zhi was deeply moved by the divine principle and even more awakened to the responsiveness of the Dharma; he thereupon modeled its tones and rhythms, transcribing them into Sanskrit pāṭha, compiling texts and creating tones to transmit as a model for later times. The manifestation of Sanskrit chanting in the world began from this. The pāṭha he transmitted numbered six sections in total.
