> As the Avadānaśataka states: When the Buddha was in the world, wealthy elders in the city of Rājagṛha gathered together to hold a great festival, making various theatrical entertainments and music to amuse themselves. At that time, a dancing master and his wife came from the south, bringing a beautiful woman named Blue Lotus (Utpalā), who was upright, exquisite, and rare in the world, clever and wise so that it was difficult to match her in conversation. Of the sixty-four arts possessed by women, she knew them all thoroughly. She was skilled in understanding the art of dance, turning, bending, and looking up, with every melody matching the meter and tempo. She proclaimed: 'In this city now, is there anyone who can dance like me? Can anyone who clearly understands the sūtras and treatises engage in questions and answers with me?' The people of the time answered: 'There is the Buddha, the World-Honoured One, residing in the Karanda Bamboo Grove; he is well able to answer questions and resolve all your doubts.' Having heard this, the dancing girl then took the crowd of people along with her, singing and dancing as she went, until she arrived in the Bamboo Grove. Seeing the Buddha, the World-Honoured One, she was still arrogant and heedless, jesting, laughing, and disrespectful to the Tathāgata. At that time, seeing her like this, the World-Honoured One used his spiritual power to transform this dancing girl into a hundred-year-old crone with white hair and a wrinkled face, sparse and missing teeth, walking hunched over. As she walked, the dancing girl looked at her own body, which had become extremely decrepit, and said: 'For what cause and condition has this female body of mine suddenly manifested such marks of decay? Today it must surely be the Buddha's majestic spiritual power that has caused me to become like this!' Thereupon, before the Buddha, she felt deep shame and remorse: 'I only pray that the World-Honoured One will forgive me.' At that time, knowing that this dancing girl's mind was already tamed, the World-Honoured One used his supernatural power to restore her body as before. The great assembly, seeing that this dancing girl was suddenly old and suddenly young without constancy, each gave rise to disgust and renunciation, understood and awoke to impermanence, and their minds were opened and resolved. Some attained the four fruits of the śramaṇa, while others generated the mind of unsurpassed bodhi. At that time, that dancing girl and her parents sought to leave the household life before the Buddha. The Buddha then said to her: 'Welcome, bhikṣuṇī!' Her hair fell out on its own, the kāṣāya clothed her body, and she became a bhikṣuṇī. Diligently cultivating, she attained the fruit of an arhat, revered and looked up to by gods and humans. At that time, having seen this matter, the great assembly requested him to explain the causes and conditions. The Buddha told the great assembly: 'Far back in the past, immeasurable lives ago, the king of the country of Vārāṇasī had a crown prince named Sundara, who entered the mountains to learn the Path and attained the five supernatural powers. He saw a kinnara woman, upright and exquisite, resembling the devas, striking various poses, singing and dancing, trying to arouse my mind and cause me to become attached and fall from the path of the ṛṣi. At that time, my mind became steadfast and devoid of lustful thoughts. I spoke to that woman: "All conditioned things are without permanence. I now observe your body: foulness and filth fill the inside of it, and it is merely covered by thin skin, which cannot be preserved for long. In no time at all, you will have white hair, a wrinkled face, and walk hunched over. Why are you now arrogant and heedless to such an extent? The sound of the song you sang just now—its voice has already changed. Why do you strike various poses here?" Thereupon, hearing these words, the kinnara woman immediately repented of her faults before the ṛṣi and made a vow, saying: "May I in a future life be able to cut off birth and death, and attain the fruit of the Path from you!"' The Buddha told the great assembly: 'If you wish to know who the prince who studied the path of the ṛṣi was at that time, he was none other than my own person. That kinnara woman was the present Bhikṣuṇī Blue Lotus. By the power of the vow she made at that time, she has now encountered me, left the household life, and attained the Path.' Having heard this, the bhikṣus rejoiced and practiced accordingly.
