> During the Qi dynasty, at Anle Temple, there was Shi Sengbian, surnamed Wu, a native of Jiankang. He went forth from household life and resided at Anle Temple. In his youth, he loved reading scriptures with an emotional plaintiveness and fitting balance; he stood alone at the beginning of the Qi, with no one surpassing him. He once held a fast at the residence of Liu Shao in Xinting. In the early night, Sengbian read the scriptures; as soon as he completed one stanza, a flock of cranes suddenly descended and gathered before the steps. When Sengbian had finished one roll, they all flew away at once. Because of this, his renown shook the realm, and he was known near and far; later scholars all venerated him as their model. On the nineteenth day of the second month of the seventh year of the Yongming reign era, the Minister of Education, Prince Wenxuan of Jingling, dreamed that he chanted a stanza of the Vimalakīrti before the Buddha. Awakening because the sound burst forth, he immediately arose, went into the Buddha hall, and in accordance with the method in his dream, chanted another stanza of the ancient Vimalakīrti; he felt that the melody flowed beautifully with a skill surpassing ordinary days. The next morning, he assembled the śramaṇas of the capital who were skilled in chanting, including Sengbian and others, to produce sounds in sequence. Sengbian transmitted one stanza of the ancient Vimalakīrti and one stanza of the Ruiying seven-character verse, which were the crowning masterpieces of the masters. Though later people occasionally transmitted them, they have all become corrupted and lost the broad essence. Sengbian died in the eleventh year of the Yongming reign era of the Qi.
