> Furthermore, the Avadānaśataka states: Formerly, when the Buddha was in the world, in the city of Kapilavastu there was an elder whose household was exceedingly wealthy, with boundless and incalculable wealth and treasures. He had a son whose countenance was upright and rare in the world. From all the pores of his body emanated candana fragrance, and from his mouth emanated the fragrance of utpala flowers. Seeing this, his parents rejoiced boundlessly and thus gave him the name Candanagandha. As he gradually grew up, he sought the Buddha to go forth, and attained the fruit of arhatship. Seeing this, the monks addressed the Buddha, saying: 'What merit did this Candanagandha plant in the past to be born in a noble family, have fragrance issue from his body and mouth, and furthermore meet the World-Honoured One, go forth, and attain the Way?' The Buddha told the monks: 'Ninety-one kalpas ago in the past, after Vipaśyin Buddha entered nirvāṇa, at that time there was a king named Bandhumat who collected his relics and built a stūpa of the four jewels one yojana high to make offerings to them. At that time, an elder entered the Buddha's stūpa, saw that the ground was damaged, mixed mud to repair it, sprinkled candana incense over it, made a vow, and departed. By virtue of this merit, for ninety-one kalpas since then, he did not fall into evil destinies, his body and mouth were always fragrant among devas and humans, and he experienced blessings and joy, up until now when he met me, went forth, and attained the Way.'
