> Again it was asked: "What of the matter of the Changgan stupa in the capital Yang\[zhou\] and the Mao County stupa being built by King Aśoka?" The answer was: "In the past, Liu Sahe had a spiritual resonance that led him to go to Yang Prefecture; climbing up to Yuecheng, he looked toward Changgan and saw an anomalous vapor. Consequently, he marked it and excavated it, as clarified in present-day biographies." Master Daoxuan asked: "If so, since there were already \[rulers like\] Ruogan, was there already a Buddhist monastery (kṣetra) or not?" The answer was: "It was not a monastery's banner (chattra-daṇḍa). 'Gan' refers to a long ridge of land; ridges are called gan. The stupas were situated along the sides of the long ridges. Do the books not say: 'Embracing Gan and Yue'? The land of Yue has many long ridges."
