> Furthermore, the Three Thousand Rules of Deportment says: When wishing to get onto a bed, there are five matters: first, one should slowly sit back onto the bed; second, one must not crawl up on all fours; third, one must not cause the bed to make a noise; fourth, one must not roughly dust off the bed-mat causing a noise; fifth, if one's feet are washed and not yet dry, one should wipe them. When on the bed, there are five matters: first, one must not blow heavily; second, one must not scold, shout, sigh, or belch; third, one must not sigh and dwell upon worldly affairs; fourth, one must not lie down like a pack of dogs; fifth, when wishing to rise and sit up, one should do so at the proper time; if the mind wanders restlessly, one should reprove oneself for the source \[of the distraction\]. Furthermore, when lying down, there are five matters: first, one's head should face the Buddha; second, one must not lie down looking at the Buddha; third, one must not stretch out both feet; fourth, one must not lie facing the wall, nor lie face down; fifth, one must not raise both knees, but must clasp the hands, restrain both feet, and stack the two knees. Furthermore, when rising from sleep and wishing to go out the door, there are five matters: first, rise from the bed without causing the bed to make a noise; second, when putting on shoes, first shake them out; third, stand upright and put on the Dharma robe; fourth, when wishing to open the door, first snap the fingers three times, not allowing the door to make a noise; fifth, if there is a Buddha image in the room, one must not turn one's back to it when going out, but should face toward the door and exit backwards, and once outside, one must not stand and converse with others.
