> The \*Sūtra of the Wise and the Foolish\* states: In the country of Śrāvastī, an old man went forth from home, and his young son became a śrāmaṇera. Together with his father, he entered a village to beg for food. The village was far and it was dusk; the father was old and walked slowly. Fearing venomous beasts, the son rushed to support his father, pushing him to the ground, and he died on the spot. The Buddha said: "I know your mind: there was no evil intent, so you do not incur the sin of killing. This is because in the past, when the father was ill and lying asleep, many flying flies repeatedly came to bother and disturb him. The father told him to chase the flies away. A fly landed on the son's forehead, and \[the father\] struck it with a staff, instantly killing his son. There was likewise no evil intent then; now it has simply been repaid in turn."
