> The Sūtra of One Hundred Parables says: Formerly, there was a man who wished to win the king's favor. He asked another person, saying: 'How can I obtain it?' Someone said to him, 'If you wish to win his favor, you must imitate the king's bodily expressions.' This man saw the king blink his eyes, and thereupon imitated the king's blinking. The king asked him, saying: 'Are you ill? Or have you been stricken by wind? Why do you blink your eyes?' The man answered the king, 'My eyes are not diseased, nor have I been stricken by wind. Wishing to win the king's favor, I saw the king blink his eyes and therefore imitated the king.' Hearing these words, the king became greatly enraged, ordered men to punish him, and banished him from the kingdom. Worldly people are also like this: wishing to draw near to the Buddha, the King of Dharma, they seek his wholesome teachings to improve themselves; yet having drawn near, they do not understand that the Tathāgata, the King of Dharma, for the sake of sentient beings, manifests shortcomings through various skillful means; thus they give rise to ridicule and slander, imitating his apparent defects. Because of this, they permanently forfeit their wholesomeness within the Buddha's Dharma and fall into the three evil destinies, just like the one who imitated the king.
