> Furthermore, the \*Mahāprajñāpāramitā-śāstra\* says: In the time of Kāśyapa Buddha, there were two brothers who left household life to seek the Way. One upheld the precepts, chanted the sūtras, and practiced seated meditation; the other widely sought dānapatis to cultivate various meritorious deeds. By the time Śākyamuni Buddha appeared in the world, one was born into an elder's household, and the other became a great white elephant whose strength could break an enemy force. The elder's son left household life to study the Way and became an arhat with the six supernatural powers, yet because his merit was meager, it was difficult for him to obtain almsfood. On another day, carrying his bowl into the city to beg for food, he could get none anywhere. Going to the stable of the white elephant, he saw that the king's provisions for the elephant were abundantly supplied in every way. He said to this elephant, 'Both I and you are guilty of faults.' The elephant immediately felt faith and did not eat for three days. The elephant keeper was frightened and looked for the man of the Way. Seeing him, he asked, 'What art did you perform to cause the king's white elephant to fall sick and be unable to eat?' He replied, 'This elephant was my younger brother in a former life. Together in the time of Kāśyapa Buddha, we left household life to seek the Way. I only upheld the precepts, chanted the sūtras, and practiced seated meditation, without practicing dāna. My brother only widely sought dānapatis to perform various acts of dāna, but did not uphold the precepts or pursue learning. Because he did not uphold the precepts, chant the sūtras, or practice seated meditation, he has now become this elephant; because he greatly cultivated dāna, food and drink are abundantly provided in every way. Because I only practiced the Way without cultivating dāna, now although I have attained the fruit of the Way, I cannot obtain food when begging. Due to these causes and conditions being different, although I have met the era of a Buddha, I still suffer hunger and thirst.'
