> Furthermore, the \*Baiyu jing\* says: In the past, on a festival day in a foreign land, all the women took utpala flowers to make garland ornaments. There was a poor man whose wife said to him, 'If you can obtain utpala flowers and bring them to me, I will be your wife; if you cannot obtain them, I will leave you.' Her husband had previously always been good at imitating the cry of a mandarin duck. He then entered the king's pond, making the cry of a mandarin duck to steal utpala flowers. At that time, the keeper of the pond asked, 'Who is in the pond?' And this poor man slipped up and answered, 'I am a mandarin duck.' The keeper caught him and took him to the king's court. Along the way, he again harmoniously imitated the cry of a mandarin duck. The keeper of the pond said, 'You did not make it before; what benefit is there in making it now?' Foolish people of the world are also like this. Throughout their lives, they harm and perform various evil deeds, not training the mind's actions to make them tame and good. When facing the end of life, only then do they say, 'Now I wish to cultivate goodness.' When the wardens of hell take them away and deliver them to King Yama, though they wish to cultivate goodness, it is of no avail—just like that foolish person who, on the verge of arriving at the king's court, imitated the cry of a mandarin duck.
