> "On the eighth day of the fourth month in the third year of the Tianjian era (May 7, 504 CE), Xiao Yan, Emperor of the Great Liang, of Lanling, bows with head to the ground and makes obeisance to the Buddhas of the ten directions, the Venerable Dharma of the ten directions, and the Holy Saṃgha of the ten directions. I humbly observe that the scriptures say: 'One who generates the bodhicitta has the very mind of the Buddha.' No other good deeds can serve as a comparison. It enables sentient beings to exit the gates of suffering of the tridhātu and enter the supreme path of the unconditioned. Therefore, when the Tathāgata's outflows were exhausted and his wisdom congealed, he attained saṃbodhi; his ultimate Dao corresponded to the faculties \[of beings\], and his virtue was perfected to achieve holiness. He ignited the torch of wisdom to illuminate the bewildered; he reflected the flow of the Dharma to clarify defilements. He displayed auspicious traces among the gods; he manifested his numinous presence beyond forms. He crossed the multitude of beings over the ocean of desire; he guided sentient beings into nirvāṇa. He ascended the lofty mountain of permanence and bliss; he emerged from the deep abysses of the river of attachment. His words transcend the catuṣkoṭi; his speech extinguishes the hundred negations. Responding with his traces in the Sahā world, his auspicious marks were born in the royal palace. Walking across the tridhātu, he became supreme; pervading the great trichiliocosm, his illumination spread. But because the receptive capacities of beings were shallow, they were prone to weariness and laxity; thus he tranquilly expounded the perfect and permanent, and also concealed his radiance among the crane-white trees. King Ajātaśatru had his sins eradicated; Vasu had his calamities dispelled. If not for encountering the Great Holy Dharma King, who could save beings from such suffering? Although his traces are concealed, his Dao suffers no deficiency. For long have I, your disciple, been lost and confounded, indulging in the service of Laozi; inherited over successive generations, I was tainted by this heterodox teaching. Now, as the cause of habitual practice brings forth goodness, I discard delusion and know to return. I now abandon the former physician and take refuge in the Right Awakening. I pray that in future lifetimes, I will leave home as a celibate youth to broadly propagate the scriptural teachings, convert sentient beings, and together attain Buddhahood. Rather would I long sink in the evil destinies within the True Dharma, than be glad to temporarily ascend to heaven by relying on the teachings of Laozi. Aspiring to the Mahāyāna mind, I depart from the thoughts of the two vehicles. I truly pray that all Buddhas will bear witness and bodhisattvas will gather me in. Your disciple, Xiao Yan, makes obeisance."
