> Under the Tang, Śramaṇa Baoqiong of Fushou Temple in Yizhou had the secular surname Ma and was a native of Mianzhu County. He left home in his youth and was exceptionally pure, aloof, frugal, and plain. He read and recited the Large Chapter \[of the Prajñāpāramitā\], once through every two days, taking this as his regular practice. Those whom he encouraged throughout the villages and associations to recite one fascicle a day approached a thousand. Those from far and wide who heard of him all came to revere and respect him. His native county bordered on Shifang and other counties, which had all long been Daoist followers clinging to heterodoxy, where there was no place for \[Buddhism\] to find shelter. Although Qiong grew up among the local customs of his homeland, he did not serve the Dao. When the various clans of the Li family held a Daoist gathering, they invited Qiong to attend. Having arrived late, he sat down without bowing. They all said, 'In not bowing to the Heavenly Worthy, are you slighting our ancestral Dharma?' Qiong said, 'Heterodox and orthodox paths are distinct, and what we serve is different. I do not even bow to Heaven, how much less to Lord Lao?' The crowd's discussions were chaotic, and they bullied and insulted him considerably. Seeing that the dispute would not cease, Qiong replied again, saying, 'If I bow to what is not proper to bow to, I fear it will bring disgrace upon your former patriarch.' He then made one bow, and the Daoist image together with its seat trembled simultaneously. He made another bow, and together with its seat it overturned and crashed to the ground. The body and seat were shattered, and the Daoist followers were ashamed. Crying out that the wind had blown it over, they vied to adjust it properly. He bowed again, and it overturned once more. Qiong said, 'The sky is clear and harmonious, yet you speak of blaming the wind. In your folly, you do not fathom my wind.' The whole assembly was terrified, and single-mindedly bowed to Qiong. When those far and near heard of it, they all abandoned the Dao and took refuge in the Buddha. The religious and secular folk throughout the region, as well as the Daoist factions in neighboring counties, sighed in unison, and all came to request Qiong to administer the bodhisattva precepts. The County Magistrate, Gao Da, who had long possessed sincere faith, respectfully received his awe-inspiring virtue, and summoned monks to the prefectural monastery to propagate lectures. In the eighth year of Zhenguan, he died at his dwelling. (The above one evidential account is drawn from the Tang Gaoseng zhuan.)
