> Another ghost said: 'Tongues grow all over my body, and an axe comes to chop them off; no sooner are they severed than they grow back, relentlessly like this. For what reason is it so?' Maudgalyāyana replied: 'In your past life, you were a practitioner of the Way. The saṃgha appointed you to make molasses syrup. Because the block of rock sugar was large and difficult to dissolve, you chopped it with an axe, and with a mind of theft you ate a mouthful. For this reason, your tongues are in turn chopped.'
