> Therefore, the Mahāvibhāṣā-śāstra states: When one makes merit for hungry ghosts, the ghosts obtain food and drink, and their bodies are augmented: the foul-smelling obtain fragrance, and those of ugly complexion obtain a handsome complexion. Furthermore, a sūtra says: The food eaten by ghosts is different—some eat pus and some eat feces; upon receiving these gifts, everything transforms into superior, wondrous colors and flavors. If a ghost has taken birth in another place, when relatives give on their behalf, through the power of that ghost's karma, it knows of it from afar and gives rise to joy. If they have returned to suffer retribution in their own home, when relatives give on their behalf, the ghost sees it in person and gives rise to joy.
