> Furthermore, the Madhyama-āgama says: If one performs giving and makes sacrificial offerings for the deceased, if they have entered birth among hungry ghosts, they will obtain the food; those in other destinies do not obtain it, because each has their own sustenance for life. If relatives are not born among them, the donor alone obtains the merit. Furthermore, when the donor is born in the six destinies (ṣaḍgati), the merit of giving always follows them. Because of holding the precepts, although one obtains a human body, one must have additional merit to assist the retribution. The Wangsheng jing says: "When merit is made after death, the deceased obtains one part out of seven, and the remainder belongs to the one who performed it."
