> Furthermore, the Sūtra on Karmic Retribution for Past Vows says: Long ago, there was a brāhmaṇa couple who had no sons and possessed boundless wealth. As they approached the end of their lives, they said to each other, "We should each swallow coins to serve as our provisions." According to the customs of that country, the dead were not buried, but simply placed beneath trees. Each swallowed fifty gold coins. When their bodies rotted, the coins emerged. There was a worthy person in the country who saw them while traveling and took pity on them; weeping in sorrow at their stinginess, he took the coins to create merit for them. He invited the Buddha and the saṃgha, preparing offerings with all his heart. Raising the food before the Buddha, he called their names and made aspirational prayers. At that time, the stingy couple, who were undergoing the suffering of hungry ghosts, were immediately born in heaven. In order to invite the four assemblies, the one reborn in heaven at that time obtained divine vision, knew that merit had been made on their behalf, and came down from heaven appearing as a young man to assist the donor. The Buddha said, "This young man in the kitchen is the true donor." The Buddha preached the Dharma for him, and he attained the path; the worthy person also attained the path. The saṃgha rejoiced, and all were able to be born in heaven.
