> In the Northern Zhou period, there was Zhang Yuan, courtesy name Xiaoshi, a native of Wancheng in Hebei. When he was just sixteen years old, his grandfather lost his sight. For three years, Yuan constantly wept in sorrow, practicing walking meditation day and night to pray for blessings and protection. Furthermore, reading the Bhaiṣajyaguru Sūtra, which says that the blind obtain sight, he invited seven monks to light seven lamps, and for seven days and seven nights they chanted the Bhaiṣajyaguru Sūtra. Each day he walked the Path, saying, 'Have I troubled you masters? Because I, Yuan, as a grandson was unfilial, my grandfather lost his sight. Now, with the light of the lamps, I bestow \[vision\] universally upon the Dharmadhātu: may my grandfather's eyes see light, and Yuan seeks to take his place in darkness!' He prayed with such earnestness through seven days. That night, he dreamt of an old man who used a golden probe to treat his grandfather's eyes, saying to Yuan, 'Do not grieve. After three days, your grandfather's eyes will certainly be cured.' In his dream, Yuan leaped with joy and could not contain himself, whereupon he awoke. He then reported this to all his family members, young and old. Three days later, his grandfather's eyes were indeed cured. (This matter is from the State History.)
