> "What is the suffering of illness? A human is composed of the harmony of the four great elements. If one great element is out of harmony, one hundred and one diseases arise; if the four great elements are all out of harmony, four hundred and four diseases arise simultaneously. If the earth element is out of harmony, the whole body feels heavy. If the water element is out of harmony, the whole body swells with dropsy. If the fire element is out of harmony, the whole body is steamed with heat. If the wind element is out of harmony, the whole body becomes rigid and stiff. The hundred joints ache as if beaten with rods and whips. The four elements advancing and retreating, hands and feet become useless; energy and strength are exhausted, and sitting and rising require others. The mouth is parched and lips scorched; sinews snap and the nose cracks; eyes do not see form and ears do not hear sound. Impurities flow forth and the body lies upon them; the mind harbors distress, and every word is sorrowful. The six relations are at one's side, watching day and night without rest; delicious dishes and fine foods are all bitter upon entering the mouth. Is this suffering or not?" They answered, "It is truly great suffering."
