> Therefore the \*Bodhisattvabhūmi-śāstra\* says: "The sin of sexual misconduct also causes sentient beings to fall into the three evil destinies. If born among humans, one receives two kinds of retribution: first, an unchaste wife; second, acquiring dependents who do not accord with one's wishes." Why does sexual misconduct lead to a fall into hell? Because sexual misconduct transgreses proper bounds and infringes upon others, causing suffering; therefore, at the end of life, one receives the suffering of hell. Why does sexual misconduct lead to emerging as an animal? Because sexual misconduct goes against human principles; therefore, emerging from hell, one receives an animal body. Why does sexual misconduct lead to becoming a hungry ghost again? Because lust and debauchery are always rooted in stinginess and craving; due to the sin of stinginess and craving, one becomes a hungry ghost. Why does sexual misconduct cause one's wife to be unchaste? Because one violated another's wife, the wife one obtains is constantly unchaste and unrighteous. Why does sexual misconduct cause one to fail to obtain dependents who accord with one's wishes? Because through sexual misconduct one snatched the beloved favorites of others, one's dependents do not accord with one's wishes, and are in turn snatched by others. One should know that lust and debauchery bring three great sufferings.
