> The five desires cloud the mental consciousness; / The five hindrances veil the power of merit. / The six sense faculties accomplish painful karma; / The six thieves disorder the mind and matter. / Waves of desire drift along with emotion; / The net of affection is woven by the mind. / The three poisons obstruct \[realization of\] personal emptiness; / The four torrents surge without cease. / Though today one alters one's practice, / The cutting of tally sticks is far from finished. / The cranes and pigeons being without end, / How can the climbing ape be brought low? / If one does not cut off the hindrances of desire, / How can one ascend to the distant heights? / Together advance to the Jeweled City, / And behold in unison the virtue of the Benevolent Sage!
