> Fifth, explaining attachment to views (dṛṣṭiparāmarśa): here again there are two kinds: the first is solitary, and the second is based upon a foot. The solitary refers to directly grasping worldly conditioned wholesome dharmas and conditioned fruits, taking them to be the supreme, most wonderful goodness; this is called solitary. Just as someone directly grasps the retribution of the heaven without conceptualization and reckons it to be nirvāṇa, calling it the most excellent; or regarding the internal body, taking the impure to be pure—all such are called solitary attachment to views. 'Based upon a foot' refers to a person who is deluded about dharmas and falsely establishes right and wrong, saying his own view is right and others' are wrong; he immediately generates a mind that clings to his own view as supreme; therefore it is named attachment to views based upon a foot. For example, giving rise to the view of individuality is the inversion of self; a foolish person does not understand, and later gives rise to a mind again, grasping the prior view of individuality as supreme. Such attachment to views is called 'based upon a foot'. The remaining meaning is the same as the previous explanation. Since this is the same as the previous, what is the difference? If one clings to conditioned worldly activities and grasps them as the path, that is called attachment to precepts and vows; if one clings to them as supreme, that is called attachment to views. Thus the Abhidharmakośa-śāstra says: 'All conditioned dharmas are discarded by noble ones; therefore, clinging to these dharmas as supreme is called attachment to views.' Moreover, the Satyasiddhi-śāstra says: 'If a person holds that precepts are the most pure, it is called the fetter of attachment to precepts and vows; then to claim that what he has grasped is true and all else is false is called the fetter of attachment to views.' If one says that worldly dharmas are supreme, all are identical to foolish persons grasping views as supreme; on this account, they are equally termed the affliction of attachment to views.
