Maudgalyāyana replied: "I wish to teach you the Dharma. Think on it carefully." At that time, the elder further thought: "These śramaṇas have long been attached to food and drink through the long night. If he wishes to discuss anything now, he surely wants to discuss food. If he asks me for it, I shall say there is none. Yet, I will listen a little to what this man has to say."
