After he sat to one side, Maudgalyāyana gradually explained the Dharma to him, delivering discourses on giving, moral discipline, and rebirth in heaven; rebuking desire as impure, and teaching that transcendence is bliss. Thereupon, right on his seat, \[the elder\] attained the pure Dharma eye; having seen the Dharma without doubts, he received the five precepts and took refuge in the Buddha, the Dharma, and the holy Saṃgha.
