> Now, the Three Jewels respond and transform according to capacities, granting benefit through sympathetic resonance. Preached with a single voice, each attains understanding according to their kind. Therefore, a treatise says: Taking refuge in the Buddha refers to the all-knowing five-part dharma-body. Taking refuge in the Dharma refers to the truth of cessation, nirvāṇa. Taking refuge in the Saṃgha refers to the place where the merits of trainees and non-trainees among the noble ones reach the exhaustion of both their own and others' bodies—that is, the place where self-and-other defilements are extinguished and reduced to nothing; hence it is called "the place of exhaustion." Therefore, the Prajñā-sūtra says: All noble persons are designated on the basis of unconditioned dharmas. "Unconditioned" is another cause of the undefiled. Because of this, the Three Jewels dwell constantly in the world and are not subject to the disparagement and neglect of worldly phenomena; hence they are named "Jewels." Just as worldly precious jewels are valued by living beings, so now these Three Jewels are what living beings of the three vehicles and the seven assemblies take refuge in and revere; hence they are named the "Three Refuges."
