> Question: Why does one receive the eight precepts and cultivate merit on the six fasting days? Answer: On these days, ghost-spirits pursue people seeking to take their lives, bringing illness, misfortune, and decline, causing people to be unlucky. Therefore, at the beginning of the kalpa, holy sages taught people to observe the fast, cultivate good, and manage merit to avoid misfortune and decline. At that time, the fasting method did not involve receiving the eight precepts; they simply took not eating for a whole day as the fast. Later, when the Buddha appeared in the world, he first taught people to receive and maintain the eight precepts for one day and one night just like all Buddhas, not eating after midday. This merit will lead people to the bliss of nirvāṇa.
