> Under the Jin, in Xinyang County, there was Shi Fa'an, also named Ciqin; it is not known where he was from. He was a disciple of Master \[Hui\]yuan, skilled in keeping the precepts and conduct, expounding the various scriptures, and concurrently practising dhyāna meditation. During the Yixi era of the Jin, there was a calamity of tigers in Xinyang County. In the county was a great communal altar, beneath whose tree a spirit temple was built, surrounded by hundreds of residents. Among the people who suffered death from the tigers, there were one or two every evening. An once traveled through that county and lodged in this village at dusk. Because the villagers feared the tigers, they had closed their gates early. An went straight under the tree and sat in dhyāna throughout the night. Toward dawn, he heard a tiger approaching carrying a person, whom it threw to the north of the tree. Seeing An, it seemed both pleased and startled, leaping and crouching before An. An expounded the Dharma and conferred the precepts upon it; the tiger crouched on the ground without moving, and after a while departed. At dawn, when the villagers tracked the tiger to beneath the tree, they were greatly astonished to see An, regarding him as a divine person. This was then spread through the whole county, and the gentry and commoners venerated him. The tiger calamity ceased from this. Thereupon they altered the spirit temple and kept An there to establish a monastery; the surrounding fields and gardens were all relinquished as the common property of the Saṃgha. Later, wishing to make painted icons, he needed verdigris but was distressed that he could not obtain it. At night, he dreamt of a person circling in front of his bed, saying, "Beneath here are bronze bells." Upon waking, he dug there and indeed obtained two bells; using the patina, he completed the icons, and later used the bronze to assist Master \[Hui\]yuan in casting a Buddha statue. It is not known where An ended his life.
