He was eight feet tall and possessed martial prowess surpassing that of ordinary men. Heading south to Mount Lu, he served Master \[Hui\]yuan as his teacher; he comprehensively studied both inner and outer scriptures, and, aspiring to transmit the Dharma, did not shrink from weariness or toil. He then built a separate thatched hut to the southwest of the mountain and, together with his disciple Tanguo, purified his thoughts in the dhyāna gate. Once, Guo dreamt that a mountain spirit sought to receive the five precepts. Guo said, "My master is here; you may go inquire and receive them from him." A short while later, Yong saw a man dressed in unlined layered robes, of upright and graceful bearing, with some twenty attendants, requesting to receive the five precepts. Because of Guo's earlier dream, Yong knew he was the mountain spirit, and so expounded the Dharma and conferred the precepts upon him. The spirit presented two foreign hoes as an offering, bowed, took his leave, and suddenly vanished.
