> Furthermore, the Buddha said: 'Disciples of the Buddha, when conferring the precepts upon people, only those guilty of the seven cardinal sins may not receive the bodhisattva precepts. Beyond the five cardinal sins, there are added the killing of an upādhyāya or an ācārya. All kings, princes, ministers, and official ranks; bhikṣus, bhikṣuṇīs, faithful men and faithful women; lustful men and women; the eighteen Brahma heavens; the rootless, those of two roots, eunuchs, male and female slaves; all ghosts, spirits, and vajra spirits; beasts and transformed persons—as long as they understand the Dharma master's words, they may all receive the precepts. They should be instructed that the kāṣāyas worn on their bodies must all be of altered colors, different from those of non-Buddhists.'
