> Furthermore, the Nirvāṇa-sūtra states: "For renunciants, there are four kinds of foul sicknesses, because of which they cannot attain the four fruits of a śramaṇa. What are the four sicknesses? They refer to the four foul desires: first, the desire for robes; second, the desire for food; third, the desire for bedding; fourth, the desire for existence. There are four good medicines that can cure these sicknesses: first, robes made of rag patches can cure a bhikṣu's foul desire for robes; second, begging for food can shatter a bhikṣu's foul desire for food; third, sitting beneath a tree can shatter a bhikṣu's foul desire for bedding; fourth, tranquility of body and mind can shatter a bhikṣu's foul desire for existence. Removing these four sicknesses by means of these four medicines is called holy conduct. Such holy conduct can be called having few desires and being content."
