> Foolish people crave worldly gain;
> Common men value empty fame.
> The three emptinesses are already difficult to discern;
> By the eight winds one is easily swayed.
> Self and other have long been empty in nature,
> Yet form and mind still bind themselves.
> In the prime of life one loves flowering beauty;
> In old age and death mounds and tombs are made.
> Dwelling on high, one does not ponder calamity;
> Holding fullness, one worries not over excess.
> For fame and gain they gladly suffer the harm of blades—
> How could this bring lasting good fortune?
> Ordinary fools blindly seek after profit,
> Just like dogs seeing filthy excrement:
> Unaware that calamity is arriving,
> How could they understand the wails of bitter pain?
