> Furthermore, the Sūtra of the Wise and the Foolish states: When the Buddha was in the world, beside the city of Rājagṛha there was a pool of water, muddy and impure, with much excrement and filth. The people of the realm cast their feces and urine into it. There was a large worm shaped like a snake, but with four legs, running east and west in that pool of water, now sinking, now surfacing. Many years passed, and it constantly dwelled in it, suffering immeasurable torment. At that time, the World-Honoured One took the bhikṣus to that pit and asked the bhikṣus: 'Do you know the past karma and conduct of this worm?' The bhikṣus all said: 'We do not know.' The Buddha said: 'In the time of Vipaśyin Buddha, there were merchants who entered the sea to gather jewels. Having acquired great treasures, they returned safely. They selected the finest jewels to offer to the Saṃgha, intending them to provide for the monks' meals. The Saṃgha accepted the jewels and entrusted them to the karmadāna. Later, when the Saṃgha's food was running low, they requested \[provisions\] from him, but he would not give them. When the Saṃgha pressed their demand, the karmadāna was enraged and said to them: 'You eat shit! These jewels belong to me. On what grounds do you demand them?' Because he deceived the Saṃgha and reviled them with evil speech, upon the dissolution of his body at death he fell into the Avīci Hell. His body constantly rolled about in boiling feces. Only after ninety-one kalpas did he emerge from hell, and now he has fallen into this place. Ever since the time of the Seven Buddhas, he has continually been this worm, and so it will be for each of the thousand Buddhas of the Bhadrakalpa.'"
