> Furthermore, the Upāsaka-śīla-sūtra states: One who attends the sick should not give rise to disgust. If one does not have goods oneself, one should go outside to seek them. If they cannot be obtained, one may borrow property of the Three Jewels to care for him; once he is cured, one must repay it tenfold. The Five Hundred Questions states: If a caretaker uses the sick person's property to supply the sick person's needs, without asking the sick person, or if asking causes resentment, in neither case may it be used. If it has already been taken, it should be repaid; not repaying it constitutes a grave offence. Furthermore, the Dharmaguptaka-vinaya states: In caring for the sick one attains five merits: first, knowing what food is suitable and what is not for the sick person, and giving it when suitable; second, not loathing or despising the sick person's urine, excrement, and spittle; third, having a mind of compassion and not caring for him for the sake of clothing and food; fourth, being able to manage medicines and broths, until he is cured or his life ends; fifth, being able to preach the Dharma to the sick person to make him rejoice, so that one's own good dharmas increase.
