> Now, human beings possess four limbs and five viscera. They alternately wake and sleep, breathing out and breathing in, while the essential qi circulates, flowing to form the nutritive and defensive systems, manifesting as complexion, and expressing as voice: this is the normal pattern of humans. Yang employs its essence, and Yin employs its form: this is what Heaven and humans share. When it falls into disorder: if suppressed, heat is generated; if obstructed, cold is generated; when knotted, it becomes swellings and polyps; when sunken, it becomes deep sores and carbuncles; when racing, it causes palpitations and anxiety; when exhausted, it causes dryness and withering. Good physicians guide it with acupuncture and stone needles and rescue it with medicines; the sages harmonize it with supreme virtue and assist it with human affairs. Therefore, the body has illnesses that can be cured, and heaven and earth have calamities that can be dispersed.
