> During the Jin, the śramaṇa Zhu Fayi lived as a hermit in the mountains and loved learning, dwelling at Baoshan in Shining. Later, he contracted an illness that lasted for a long time. Every medical treatment was exhausted, yet there was no improvement at all. As his condition grew increasingly severe day by day, he ceased to treat himself, and solely placed his sincere devotion in Avalokiteśvara. After several days like this, while sleeping during the daytime, he dreamed of a religious man coming to examine his illness and thereupon treating it for him. He cut open his intestines and stomach, washing out the viscera, and saw an accumulation of extremely large quantities of impure substances. Having finished washing them, he put them back inside and said to Yi: 'Your illness has been eliminated.' Waking from the sleep, his ailments were completely cleared away, and he soon returned to normal. Consulting the sūtra, it says that he 'may manifest in the form of a śramaṇa or a brāhmaṇa'—in one's thoughts, was not Master Yi's dream indeed this? Yi passed away in the seventh year of the Taiyuan era (382). The six stories from Zhu Changshu to Yi were all compiled by Fu Liang, President of the Department of State Affairs under the Song. Liang himself stated that his late father had associated with Yi, and whenever Yi related this matter, he always felt an increased awe and reverence.
