As the Nirvāṇa Sūtra says: "There are two pure dharmas that can rescue sentient beings: the first is shame (hrī), and the second is remorse (apatrāpya). Shame means not committing evil oneself; remorse means not instructing others to commit it. Shame means feeling inwardly ashamed; remorse means disclosing it to others. Shame means being ashamed before humans; remorse means being ashamed before the heavens. These are called shame and remorse. Because one has shame and remorse, one is able to revere parents, teachers, elders, and all clerics, laypeople, humans, and non-humans; one is then able to venerate the Three Jewels and eliminate all evil karma."
